Express Yourself With Air Plants!

Express Yourself With Air Plants!

Express yourself
with air plants.

Or, Tillies - as we like to call them.

Air plants represent freedom, creativity and spontaneity.

They are part of the Tillandsia family and come with many undeniable health benefits while not requiring much maintenance.

Continue scrolling for five fun facts about these majestic plants!

#1. They are air-purifying crusaders
One study showed that air plants actually take more particulates out of the air than any other plant. They do a great job filtering airborne particulates - and that is actually how they get their nourishment in nature. NASA research into the superpowers of houseplants revealed how they actually clear the air of toxins.

#2. They are Epiphytes
An air plant is what is known as an epiphyte – meaning that rather than being stuck in the soil, they attach themselves to things like trees, rocks, fences, and other structures, but they do not feed off the host for survival. Spanish moss and orchids are a few other examples of epiphytes. Orchids and air plants thrive together beautifully in arrangements (see below for our own exclusive selection!)

#3. They make babies (aka pups)

All air plants bloom. After they bloom, they produce little offsets called pups. How adorable. These pups can be removed and treated as an entirely new plant or can be left on their mom and create clusters.

#4. Their cousins are tasty
Tillandsia (air plants) are members of the Bromeliad family which makes them close cousins to pineapples. Don't take a bite out of your tillies, though!

#5. They like their drinks dirty
Leave the Pellegrino at home. Air plants love water from lakes, ponds, aquaria, rain barrels and even birdbaths. Since most homes don’t mimic the natural environments from where Tillandsia usually live, the plants require occasional misting and dunking.
