Trend Watch, Part 2: Moss Art
Sustainable botanicals are appearing more and more often in interior design solutions and what is seen as an emerging trend in commercial design is also beginning to take hold in residential and smaller retail settings: moss walls and moss art. (Read our companion blog on Moss Walls.)
Moss walls and moss art designs feature preserved reindeer moss, treated while living with a natural glycerin preservative that allows it to retain the appearance of living moss yet without the requirements of a live plant. By eliminating the need for water, light, fertilizer, pesticides and other resources associated with plant maintenance, preserved moss offers a more sustainable solution for interiorscapes.
Moss art is not only sustainable, it is versatile! Moss can be applied to two- and three-dimensional surfaces to create maximum impact in the interior environment. It can be anchored to flexible or stiff substrates to accommodate curved walls or other contoured surfaces.
Today’s homes are all about open space with fewer square feet of wall space so a large scale moss design may be too much. Here’s where moss letters can be a perfect design solution. You can choose the words or design, dimensions and even the font (from our library) and thus design something that’s a perfect fit for your space.
Moss letters create a tone or attitude for your interior. Choose your initials…maybe a favorite word for affirmation, inspiration or motivation…or a favorite location…or a song lyric…your main mantra. Really, the possibilities are as endless as your imagination.
If you’re a business owner, Terry Furuta Designs can also transform your logo or company tagline into moss art for your store or reception area. This is a perfect way to reinforce your identity as a sustainable business from the moment your customers enter your space.
Another way to invite the benefits of Biophilia (the positive feelings associated with being with other forms of life, read more here) into your space is with three dimensional moss art. In this whimsical assemblage I combine preserved moss and air plants with a wire dress form to create a sustainable botanical sculpture that begs the viewer a closer look. You cannot not smile in the presence of this creative curiosity :)
Throwing a bon voyage party or celebrating a college send-off? Celebrate with moss. Here I’ve covered a miniature suitcase with preserved moss. But what about a baby carriage for a baby shower, or “presents” for the holidays, or….. ? Well, you get the picture. It’s easy to see how versatile moss can be as a design element that entertains the visual and tactile senses and seizes the imagination.
