Trend Watch, Part 1: Moss Walls
Sustainability is a big buzz word in the commercial interior community – in addition to good corporate citizenry, sustainability delivers long term financial benefit. But so often sustainability practices can be costly to install and maintain in the short- and midterm time frames. This has certainly been the case with living walls.
Living walls are just that – vertical expanses of live plants anchored on a soil-filled metal grid. These spectacular, novel space adornments enhance visual impact, calm the human psyche, and improve indoor air quality. But due to the financial and carbon footprint costs for installation and maintenance of living walls they lose points on the sustainability scale.
The Sustainable Solution for Green Walls
I’ve been working with several clients for a more sustainable way to incorporate green walls into commercial spaces: moss walls. Preserved moss is living reindeer moss infused with a natural glycerin preservative that freezes the moss in time, forever retaining its springy, alive texture and lush green color. Custom designed moss walls can have a powerful impact on the aesthetic and attitude of your commercial interior, be it an elevator lobby, restaurant, retail, or hospitality installation.
Preserved moss provides all the benefits of living walls:
- Visual and textural complement to architectural surfaces
- Acoustic absorption
- Air cleansing action
- Biophilic effect (sense of calm, optimism, freedom)
Yet, preserved moss interiors do not present the cost barriers of living walls:
- Minimal structure retrofit
- No light, watering, fertilizer or pesticide investment
- No labor costs for regular maintenance
In addition, preserved moss offers design versatility – with a wooden or flexible substrate, there is no limitation to the size or shape of the interior installation including the very on-trend curved wall. In contrast, living walls are confined to flat, rectangular designs because of the grids on which they are anchored.
If the visual impact of a moss wall is too much for your space you may prefer letters, taglines or logos instead. Practically any digital line art can be replicated in moss. Unexpected and intriguing, moss walls and moss art designs bring life to any interior. Stately and dignified, or relaxed and whimsical, this new design trend is about making a tangible and intangible statement with moss walls and moss wall art.
